				      <description>Building Ever-More Sustainable Buildings

LENSES: A New Tool Focused on Regenerative Built Environments

The art and science of high performance buildings is constantly evolving as owners, designers, builders and communities set themselves higher goals. Learn about a process tool in development by the Colorado-based Living Environments Advocacy Project (LEAP) intended to guide projects toward regenerative design.

What is 'regenerative design&amp;#63;' Good question! Regenerative Design is an approach to green building that seeks to develop healthy, living ecosystems, communities, and local economies. The tool, called LENSES, for Living Environments in Natural, Social, &amp; Economic Systems, focuses on the built environment through the 'lenses' of universal sustainability principles and unique bioregional characteristics.

Presenters:
Brian Dunbar, LEED AP, Executive Director, Institute for the Built Environment &amp; CSU Faculty

Steph Hodgin, Fellow, Rocky Mountain Institute

Sustainability Breakfast
Green IT: Practical, Profitable and Driving a Sustainable Economic Future

Colorado Software &amp; Internet Association (CSIA) joins CORE to co-host our monthly Sustainability Breakfast, which will help you understand why Green IT is a hot topic and will continue to be as we move into the new, clean, green economic era. Dave Spear from Istonish and John Krzkowski from 19Marketplace will present a variety of practical ways to make your IT operations cheaper and 'greener'. Jonathan Senger of Sustainable IT Group will talk about how IT is fast becoming the driving force for more sustainable operations at ALL companies, regardless of the nature of their business.

Being “Green” and being profitable can be achieved through a variety of inexpensive, eco-friendly adjustments to your IT operations. John Krzykowski, General Manager for 19Marketplace, and Dave Spear, VP for Sustainability at Istonish, Inc. will demonstrate how companies have significantly reduced IT operational costs by implementing practical solutions including day-to-day operational changes, printer and desktop power management, server virtualization, virtual service delivery and software as a service (SaaS).

Everything from demand-side management of energy in commercial buildings to electronic alternatives to commuting to work to managed IT services not only reduce costs in ANY type of business but also contribute to a more sustainable global economy. Jonathan Senger, Founder and CEO of Sustainable IT Group, will show how IT is increasingly becoming the driving force in our new, resource-efficient, carbon constrained economy.

CSIA and CORE jointly bring you a comprehensive perspective on why Green IT is a hot topic.

				      <title>July 09th, 2009 - Responsible Economy Roundtable</title>
				      <link>http://www.casba.info/calendar/events/index.php&#63;com=detail&amp;eID=1433</link>
				      <description> The Responsible Economy Roundtable

July 9th, 2009
8:00 a.m. ~ 2:30 p.m.
Mi Casa Resource Center
Convened by The Progress Group

The Era of Responsibility

Events of the past year have Americans asking whether the U.S. economy encourages fair or foul play. The collapse of financial institutions due to fraudulent mortgage lending practices has led many to question the values our economy is built on. Is the market serving the needs of all Americans, especially low- and moderate-income people&amp;#63; Do we need a new business ethic&amp;#63; Some say we are facing a moral as well as financial crisis.

Taking Action

You’re invited to participate in the July 9th Responsible Economy Roundtable because you’re interested in discovering new ways to create a more equitable and ‘responsible’ economy. As a nation and community, we have a unique opportunity to reconsider what is important and worth investing in. Will we continue to engage in short-term thinking with unrealistic hopes for high financial returns&amp;#63; Or, will we build solid assets, such as strong schools, clean energy, good health care and stable jobs&amp;#63;

The Goal

A key strategy is to promote new models and values for how business operates. In the case of the Roundtable this means growing the number of social entrepreneurs. These are “triple bottom line” (financial, social and environmental) businesses that use market-based strategies to advance a social mission, while generating revenue. Our particular focus is on scaling-up good ideas, identifying solutions, and supporting social enterprises run by low and moderate-income persons in the twenty-one to thirty-nine year old age group.

The Roundtable is dedicated to supporting the next generation of Denver-area social entrepreneurs from underserved communities, who have the talent and vision, but lack the necessary resources to sustain and scale their ideaventures. The goal is to connect these innovative people and their good ideas to business leaders and civic organizations with resources. A specific objective is to deepen the involvement of the private sector.

Over time, the Roundtable looks to serve as a forum for Denver area low-moderate income entrepreneurs to present their game-changing ideas and seek support (mentoring, business development and seed funding) from more mature, socially responsible businesses. The intended outcome of these efforts will be the emergence of new self-sustaining enterprises that generate revenue, while creating good jobs and wealth within historically marginalized communities. The plan is to hold subsequent Roundtable every four months, keeping the number of participants to 100.

Coming Together

This is an ‘all hands on deck’ moment. The economic and social challenges we face here in Colorado and across the nation are beyond the problem-solving ability of one sector.

The July 9th Roundtable will bring together people from different walks of life: business, social entrepreneurs, non-profits, government, unions, venture capital, foundations, faith and academic institutions. We’ll share our ideas on what defines a responsible economy and explore the role that ‘triple bottom line’ enterprises can play in creating new markets and economic opportunities. We’ll also talk about how the existing social enterprise community can better collaborate.

Objectives

•	Develop a common understanding of the concept of a ‘responsible’ economy in the Denver area, and the role that social entrepreneurs can play in building such an economy.
•	Determine the appropriate measurements of success for a social entrepreneur as they help build a vibrant business and greener economy.
•	Learn about triple bottom line business models and best practices and how they can be expanded.
•	Support young aspiring social entrepreneurs to advance their business ideas.
•	Explore ‘values-based’ mentoring and training programs that link aspiring low-moderate income social entrepreneurs with progressive businesspeople.
•	Accelerate and help strengthen existing networks of social innovators, private companies and community leaders working to build and support a responsible economy.

Together we will share ideas and resources and answer the call of President Barack Obama’s ‘era of responsibility.’

Organization

The Roundtable is organized by The Progress Group LLC, a Denver-based company run by Richard Eidlin. Our mission is to bring together business leaders, social entrepreneurs, non-profits, policy makers, faith leaders and academicians to nurture the connection between environmentally sound economic development and social enterprise.

				      <title>July 09th, 2009 - Thinking and Talking about Global Warming</title>
				      <link>http://www.casba.info/calendar/events/index.php&#63;com=detail&amp;eID=1440</link>
<description> How we make the case for climate action
A brown-bag lunch presentation by Charlie Montgomery

Thursday July 9, 2009
12-1pm
3rd floor meeting room
Alliance Center, 1536, Wynkoop St, Denver

Global warming is finally getting mainstream attention. Scientists are telling us we must act as soon as possible to hold off a disastrous rise in temperatures. Government officials across the United States are formulating plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions and conserve energy. Newspaper editors are treating climate change less as a source of provocative debate than as a serious national and global threat. What is not clear is whether Americans appreciate the severity of the climate crisis or the real challenge of tackling it. This presentation is intended to serve anyone who would educate and persuade those who are unengaged or uncertain. It offers a basic set of facts and conceptual tools for making the case for aggressive climate action.

Charlie Montgomery is a writer and former professor and outreach coordinator at the Rocky Mountain Climate Organization.

Please bring your lunch. Seating limited.
